- I was born and raised in Mexico. When I finished my residency in General Surgery at the Hospital General del Centro Médico Nacional, IMSS, in Mexico City in 1984 I was invited to stay as Staff Surgeon at the Gastrointestinal Surgery Dept. at this hospital in the night and weekend shifts; it was the major medical center of the largest public health system from the Social Security in Mexico (IMSS), and it was the major referral center for surgical cases that had complications and for major surgical procedures and parenteral nutrition support. Simultaneously I started my training at the Head and Neck Surgery Dept. (HNSD) of the same hospital.
At the HNSD we were in charge of many procedures, open and endoscopic on the airway, pharynx, thyroid and parathyroid, tracheal and laryngeal stenosis, carotid paragangliomas, among others. I was involved in the training of ENT residents. I stood there as Staff Surgeon when I finished my second training. In 1991 I was invited to manage the Surgical areas of my hospital (10 ORs of high specialty surgeries). It was a time of many new technologies arriving to the surgical practice and that is something that has always attracted me, in that time the IMSS was very well funded and we had the latest technology.
In 1990 I took my first 3 courses in Laparoscopic and Minimally Invasive surgery, 2 of them in Mexico and the third was in Miami FL. I started practicing laparoscopy and thoracoscopy that same year mainly in my private practice. After 2 years I was invited to direct the operating rooms at the major private hospital in Mexico City, Hospital Ángeles del Pedregal (HAP), 10 ORs for all specialties and 5 OBGYN. The reason why they called me was that many new technologies for different surgical specialties were arriving to the hospital, particularly for minimally invasive procedures and they needed someone to oversee the good use of the new technology, and surgery scheduling. I kept my private practice all the time until today. By that time, private hospitals had the latest technology and many new procedures were arriving to the surgical armamentarium of General Surgery, laparoscopy, Minimally invasive surgery and Head and Neck. I started as Professor of Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine of Universidad La Salle Mexico City - my Alma Mater - in 1998.
I decided to be full time in private practice at HAP in 1992. I became Assoc. Prof. of Surgery working with the residents of GS at the HAP hospital for 10 mo. I started doing Single Port Surgery in 2010 and published my experience with Cholecystectomy until that time in 2022. In November 2013 I was certified in Robotic Surgery at the Memorial Hermann, Houston, TX USA. I started doing Fluorescence guided surgery (FGS) in november 2018. I started applying it in abdominal surgery ( Cholecystectomy, colon in benign and malignant pathology, small bowel, inguinal and abdominal wall hernias ), and Head an Neck surgical procedures ( Thyroid, parathyroid, lymph node dissections, carotid paragangliomas, surgery and endoscopy for stenosis of the larynx and trachea ). We published our experience with FGS in cholecystectomies in 2022 , and in 2025 we published our experience with FGS in HNS. I have presented videos on difficult cholecystectomies, biliary anatomy variations, hernia surgery, treatment of stenosis of the airway, lymphatics of the testes at the Annual Congress of the European Association for Endoscopic Surgery since 2021. I am working now in a preclinical investigational protocol for FGS in the Head and Neck region, and I continue doing Single Port laparoscopic Surgery.
Now I´m in solo private practice as Attending Surgeon in General Surgery, Digestive Tract surgery, Head and Neck and Robotic Surgery applying FGS in many procedures of these different specialties.
